Product Development Engineer

The Role

The role involves participation in the full lifecycle of a product from initial concept through to final manufacturing and will vary depending on project scope. Manages and directs the research and development programs to meet organisational needs and to capitalise on potential new products.

Responsible for the design, development and prototype testing. Incorporating technology, value engineering, and cost reduction measures. Providing design documentation and standard work instructions.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure a safe working environment, follow, support and maintain working practices, comply with all relevant HSE legislation and local policies and procedures.
  • Proactively work to solve manufacturing issues using effective fault diagnosis skills and implement immediate containment, together with longer term innovative solutions.
  • Continually work as a Team Member to maintain and improve the team work philosophy within the business
  • Provide technical oversight and expertise when requested.
  • Research and formulate potential new products.
  • Improve existing products or services.
  • Identify areas for improvement and investigate how changes might be adopted.
  • Sourcing alternative components due to obsolescence in existing products
  • Design, development, test and trial installation of products
  • Maintain good relationships with suppliers/consultants.
  • Provide test and technical reports when requested.
  • Investigate customer returned products and respond appropriately.
  • Assist and offer support to production if and when required.
  • Design-for-manufacture to reduce product cost and improve manufacturability.
  • Defining process capability requirements and metrology requirements for the products.
  • Promoting production readiness requirements into earlier product development phases

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Mechanical and Electrical degree
  • Proven ability to follow written work instructions
  • Proficiency in the use of IT packages (to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and CAD/Solid Works
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and verbal). Fluent in English
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy in all work
  • Ability to work effectively on own initiative and effectively contribute within a team environment
  • Outstanding data collection, analysis, and documentation skills
  • Extensive experience in product development including method development and method validation

DESIREABLE CRITERIA

  • Previous experience within a Research & Development environment
  • Understanding of ISO 9001& ISO14001
