Principal Maintenance Manager
Taskmaster Resources are looking for a professional, committed Principal Maintenance Manager to join the team of our client based in Newport, Isle of Wight.
Hours: Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 16:00.
Pay rate: £400 per day
The Principal Maintenance Manager leads the safe, effective and efficient delivery of all maintenance activity across one or more waste treatment sites. This includes oversight of planned and unplanned maintenance, technical change, lifecycle planning, and compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations. Technologies may include, but are not limited to, Advanced Thermal Treatment (ATT), Energy from Waste (EfW), Anaerobic Digestion (AD), Mechanical Treatment (MT), and Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
This is a senior leadership position responsible for ensuring asset reliability, team performance and cost-effective maintenance delivery within a high-risk, process-intensive environment. The postholder also acts as the site or contract Confined Space Responsible Person.
Maintenance Strategy & Delivery
- Lead all preventative and reactive maintenance activity, ensuring plant availability, safety and operational continuity.
- Ensure Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (e.g. Pirana) are effectively used to plan, monitor and report on asset performance and maintenance tasks.
- Ensure statutory and regulatory inspection regimes (e.g. LOLER, PSSR, PUWER) are consistently applied and evidenced.
- Plan and manage site-wide shutdowns and programmed outages to minimise disruption and maximise asset performance.
- Financial & Commercial Management
- Set, manage and report against the annual maintenance operating budget.
- Lead planning and execution of lifecycle (non-routine) maintenance in line with asset strategy and contract obligations.
- Oversee procurement and stock control of spares, services and equipment in line with company procedures and commercial targets.
People Management
- Lead the maintenance team, setting clear expectations for safety, performance and behaviour.
- Provide technical guidance, support and structured development to direct reports and wider technical staff.
- Promote clear communication, accountability and high standards across all maintenance functions.
Asset & Process Reliability
- Maintain a comprehensive Preventative Maintenance schedule to ensure plant reliability and legal compliance.
- Lead root cause investigations and deliver solutions to address asset failures and performance issues.
- Oversee engineering change, ensuring appropriate governance, technical assurance, and documentation.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Act as the designated Confined Space Responsible Person for the site or contract.
- Promote and ensure a strong safety culture across maintenance operations, including contractor control.
- Lead incident investigations, corrective actions and interface with internal and external compliance functions as required.
Qualifications
- HNC/HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent).
- Confined space trained or willingness to undertake training.
- CSCS or relevant professional certification.
Skills
- Strong understanding of engineering systems in complex industrial environments (EfW, AD, ATT, MT or similar).
- Proficient in use of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (e.g. Pirana).
- Solid knowledge of regulatory compliance linked to plant maintenance and statutory inspection requirements.
- Clear planner with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver against multiple deadlines.
- Financially astute with experience of managing large operational budgets.
Experience
- Significant maintenance leadership experience in energy, utilities, waste management, or similar sectors.
- Delivered complex maintenance projects and planned outages safely, on time, and within budget.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams across multiple shifts and technical disciplines.
- Developed and implemented lifecycle asset management plans.
- Proven track record of managing supply chains and contractors to support business outcomes.
